The constantly thickening atmosphere of the political situation in the north, and a higher rate of exchange on London, had a weakening induence on our share market, and business during the wook under review has been an a very moderate scale, while quotations have ruled rather unsteady. The sterling' demand rate on Hongkong, 1st January, 1904, London is le 10 5-164,, while the rates on Shanghai ure Tis. 714 for u TT., and Tls, 711 to.71 for three days' sight Private Paper.
BANK SHARES.-Hongkong and Shanghais sold at $650 to $640, closing with buyers at $6124, and possibe sellers at 3645; the London rate dropped to £58, recovered since to £63. 10s, and closes at £62; subject to audit, the directors will recommend at the forthcoming axesting a dividend of £1. 108. tl, and a bonus of 10, por share, add $500,000 to reserve, and Nationals carry forward about $1,100.00. have improved further, and as high as $35 has been paid, at which figure there are buyers.
