THE SUPPLY OF IVORY. Ivory is so beautifal a substance, and lends itself so graciously to artistic treatment, that its increasing scarcity--not to think of its practical disappearance in the not distant future -ie a matter of serious regret. Every year says the Globe) wees some diminution in our imports, the annual average of which has been considerably less than 300 tons during the last ten years. The best qualities of African ivory, for which only a generation ago about seven shillings a round was obtainable, now comand three or four times that price, and there is every probability that this will be exceeded before long. It is but a fresh instance of a very old truth. We take too much, and give too little. In a word, we do not give the elephant a chance, but are exterminating him for the sake of his tasks.
