The following is said to be the truth about Patani," by the Singapore Free Press's special commissioner in Siamese Malara-

There is some little discuity in Approaching this section of my saquiries owing firstly to the fact that so many, things can be said about Patani, and secondly because much of what I have to my has been told before, though smaggerated manner. One does not need Patani has, if anything, a more interesting however, to go back further in that history than about eighty years ago, when the Siamese camè down and conquered the kingdom. Then people wore carried off, that the country was a large number of the almost dopopulated. The Tengku Bear of Kelantan, seeing how things stood, took with

lim some five or six thousand men from Kelan tan, and procended to Patani where he settled down and assumed the title of Rajah, apparently on the ground of relationship with the former Rajah, and he was the first Rajah to take the onth not to fight against Siam. The Siamese recognized his title than, and over since the Rajabs of Palani havo been direct members of the original stock. Well for nearly seventy years Patani and the other Statva word left in peace by the Siamese, and though one cannot say that they advanced by leaps and bounds towanle civilisation, they were for the most part well raled, and in any case the population grow and commerce increased. In Patani for instance, nat only was an important caual constructed on the Patani river near Nongobik but severa very fale roads were built, and the salt industry. which is now one of the chief forms of revenge, Wus gradually built up.

Six years ago in the time of the late Rajah Sleyman, there arrived in Patani Luang Besil, Siamese official, who born a letter from the King of Siam in which occurred the following antenes:-"I send you this Commission in order that if you have any trouble in adminis: tering your people you may call him to advise you as to the best means of doing it." From this little spark was kindled the great fire which sorionsly threatens to work the destruc of all this States. Hing made the sug gestiva he proceeded to carry it into force, and without the consent of the Rajiks let the farm to a Chinaman for three years, promising, howoror, that the Rajalis should get their share. It may be noted in passing that for the first three years ths joint revenue was $30,200 and for the next term of three years it was 8230,040, Au arrangement was made which
