Margaret Bingham nourished her soul with solitary musings when taking daily constitution als on the Devonshire moor where her father's reutery was situated. She had no brothers, and or two sistors being several years older than herwolf were not very companionable. They were worthy girls and full of good deeds which they did when any of the scattered parishioners were ill. They visited the schools, worked for bazaars, golfed, bicyclad, and were so busy generally that they took little notice of their young sister. So it was that Margaret developed an individuality that made her seem strange

One of these was the work women should do and the place they should occupy in the world. For herself she determined that marriage should never be the sole object of her existence. She would have work, a career, something for which to live quite apart from matrimony,

His was calf's love and lore at first sight, which is the strongest kind. How well he remembered the day, and how it seized him! He bad returned from an establishment where he had been cram wing for a commission in the army, and was at the time a month or two less than twenty years of age. The meeting of Margaret and Dick took place in this way. The latter had been sent by his father with a mega to the rentory. Mrs. Bingham and bor two elder daughters were busy as Margaret went into the drawing-room to re- ceive him. As she entered, so tastefully because so simply dressed, with a amile of sympathetic greeting, he received a delightful shock. He did not know what had come over him, and he was afraid to analyse the feeling lost it should vanish. It was the meeting of his other solf,ANTISTRY of that which was wanting to complete his nature.
