for 1900, commenting on the unsatisfactory state of the revenuo derived from our exten- sion on the mainland. The discontent in the Police and ou the Goal staff has receivedt considerable attention in the Press of the Colony. The question of the Venire Con- vention and the exodus of sick Chinese from the Colony during a time of epidemic is of the
most importance to all engaged in business in Hongkong. Finally, the manner ig which Mr. OSBORNE was put off at the Sanitary Board, with a meagre abstract from the documents for which he asked, has been noticed by us, and has aroused no little in- $6.96 $7.56 dignation among those who expected that the Government would makeat kast some attempt to justify its sneers at the Sanitary Board's Kuleger of carrying out its duties, expressed in the memorandum on the Colony's Petition. 19,20 to the Secretary of State. It is not to be exported that satisfactory replies will be forthcoming to-day on all these points, but the only way in which information can be gained is by pressing repeatedly for it. A continued refusal, as in the case of the explanation asked for by Mr. OSBORNE, tells its own tale. The manner in which Mr WHITEHEAD's questions will be met to-day will be watched with extreme interest.
