A WONDERFUL ALL-ROUNDER,
At the sune Loulou Athletic Club meeting Alvia C. Kraenzlein made a welcome re appearance. for since his return from England lest year it had been reported that this extraordinary young man had forsaken athletics | for the more serious duties of life. This was evidently a Yankee yarn. The Pennsylvanian won a 120 yards hurdle handicap over ten fights in the remarkable time of 15 3-5 Beck, despite the wind which was very largely against him. Last year at the championship he accomplished 15 2-5 sacs., but as we had a strong breeze behind him this was not passed as a record by the Amateur Athletic Amociation. Therefore his fent of last Saturday should go on the books as a British record. The merit of this gan soon, he made apparent, for 17 sees is the standard time in a chur pionship race, The first man to run the distance and jump the kurdles in 36 secs. at the championship meeting. was Charles F. Deft, a nephew of the great oricketer, and now-a-days a well-known com mercial traveller for one of the very largest houses in the lace trade. I well remember the chupionship meeting in 1995, when Godfrey Show, of the Loudon Athletic Club, did 15 4-5 secs. It was a very still hot July day, and when the spectators saw the new time written up on the board by old Net Perry how they did cheer! We had all begun to look upon 16 rece. for this kind of race as the limit of human powers in our climate, but twice has Kranzlein show us that this is not the case. As he was timed on Saturday by Dr. Turner, of the N.C.U., and by 8. K. (1965 | Holman, of the London Athletic Club, I see ho reason why .15 3-5 should not supersede the 15

His style is peculiar, but there [1910 is no mistaking the way he glides over each Bight. On the same afternoon this athlete also took the long jump df 23 ft. 3 in., and it may be added that he is a very fine spriuber, and capable of doing about even time. That's my opinion of Americans generally in games, and I am sorry to my that in this country we do not now scem up-to-áto.

It may be urged that the bowling in all those instances was very moderate, and no doubt that is so, but it must not be forgotten that there are nine ways for a man. to get out, and that it is very easy to do so. Mr. R. H. Lyttelton has declared that any fool can make runs nowadays, but I think this as untrue as it is uncomplimentary. First-class exiokuters are still rare, and one has only to think of the number of men who can score freely in club cricket who are immediately quits at sea when tried in first-class cricket against good bowling. Mr. Fry has greatly improved since he us at Oxford, and, even though he scored 10 not out for Oxford against Cam- bridge at Lord's în 1894, there is no doubt that then he was a cramped, ugly batsman of limited powers. But by practice wal patienc he has attained a fine flowing masterly mode of latting, and now no England team would be complete without him. He is, moreover, a brilliant fielder, and generally one of the most famous men in the world. I often wonder what Surrey think that they did not keep hita. Ho has been the holder of the English record jakup: has been an oven-time sprinter, has played for Oxford and England at Association football, and very nearly obtained his Blue as a Rugby tack. Nor should it be forgotten that to all these accomplishments must be added the fact that the okl Roptonian was the senior scholar of Wadham College, Oxford, got a first-class i moderations, and took honours in Literro Humaniores, so that he took one of the best possible degrees. He tried the post of being one of the masters at Charterhouse School, but he desired a position which gave him greater freedom, so he abondoned the office of bewober for that of a free lance in journalism. He
