Mr. R. Gardiner, the Chief Officer of the steamer Madura of the British India Fleet, was drowned last month while proceeding up the Calcutta river. He was working on the fore castle head at the anchor; and suddenly over- balanced himself, and fell into the river. The body has not been recovered. Mr. Gardiner was an officer of exceptional ability and promise, having been many years in the service.
