be indigenous to the whole monsoon region of Eastern Asia, ay he has found it growing wild in dense uncultivated forests as far north as the islands of Southern Japan. He believes that it existed in Ching, and Japan long before the

The period of cultivation having been too short to produce the modification existing. he concludes that the peculiar properties of the Chinese plant have resulted from changes of elimite in Eusteru Asia since the Tertiary Epoch, instead of from cultivation in a colder climate or from exhausted soil. Directions are given according to the Chinese inethod of using the medicines.

The nature of the oil is very mild, but its action is exceedingly good, powersing wor | derfully curative effects in both internal and external diseases. As it is an invaluable mec- cine it should be kept on hand ready for use by all persons, whether at home or abroad.

DIRECTIONS.

For external use rub the oil on the temples, forehead, betoon' the eyebrowa, bók of the cara and neck on the chest and backs, on the abdomen or wherever the pain or soreness iz ocated. It must be rubbed on for 5 minutea. For toothache put a little in the tooth on cotton and rub on the gums. The oil has beneficiol effects in headache, fainting, colds, sore throat, stomach-ache, colic paine, rheumatism, numbe ness of the limbs, pui in the luck, cramp, local swelling and inflammations, infneurs, dishes, toothache, paius in the lead and con- vulsions after childbirth, prickly heat, boils, und mosquito bites.

Internally the dose in five drops in a Ettle. water, and it is to be repeated, every two or three hours at the same time using it ex ternally.

The proprietor of the Kwong Chí Koon Drug Store of Canton-has placed in my hands for examination a number of his preparations with the recipe for sach.

His "I YAU As you wish Oil" has a wide eirenlation and is very much used. It composed of aromatic and stilant herbs and barks, most of which are wall known in our pharmacopoeia, together with pingpin (a costly: kind of camphor) bishops wort, orris root. with of the objectionable substances which enter two or three other is known articles, but none Into many Chinged medicines. It is one of

the combinations which has real morits and it is not strange that it has attained so wide a reputation for the relief of maladies for which it is recommended.
