| Paton (New) including the Bishop of Salford, Mr. J. Slagg, M.P, Mr. B. Armitage, M., and the president Patna (Gh).... Banaras (Now). of the chamber of commerce, The Bishop of Monchóster wrote that he had confidence in "the ses of the society. The Mayor said it had after been a matter of surprise to Lim that while Continental nations, like France, Germany, and Austria, devoted an inch attention to geogra phiesl resanroh, and placed that science so high, yet's maritime and oolonising people like the English treated it with comparative indifference. While there were many geographical sociation on the Continent, so far as ho know there was in England only one. Though we could boast of having a Grant, Speke, Livingstone, and Johnson; ret this made it all the more wonderful that little interest seated to be taken in the matter by the grant pass of Englishmen. The president of the chamber of commerce stated that such a society would be at normous value to the com muuily, and it was a disgrace to Manchastor that there was not one already established. There were such socleties in Franes, fear in Por ingal, five in Austris. The one society in Eng In bared 3,400 members, and had on in. ecme of 12001, por arsaw, aided by a Govern ment grant of 5001. They would require aroom for the use of the mosity, where the members scald study maps and geographical literature. They wanted 500 or 800 members, and unless the society included 10 or a dose of tas leading merchants of Manchester to give their onergy sad time to make it a saccoss, he was afraid is won'd got on bat poorly. Ms. B. Armitage, M.P., the Bishop of Salford, Mr. J. Blagg, MP. and others having spoken in favour of the es- tablishment of such a ucisty, a resolution to that effect was carried, and a procisional committtes appointed. Mr. E. M. Stanley has promised to give an address in connection with the object of the meeting.

A oirotlar, signed by the Earl of Mar and Kellie, su Grand Mastor Mason of Scotland, ia about to be issued be the Scottish craft, with tho view to the raising of funds towards the forma tion of an extended scheme of Scottish Masonic banevolence. The appalstates that gumbacs of 30 151 Grand Lodge, boliaring that the time had arrived revenus of Grand Lodge, when the surplus amounting to about £1,700 annually, might to a " great extent be legitimately applied in the promo- tion af the comfort and well-being of the din tressed, brought the matter for the con sideration of Grand Lodge, with the resnit that a special committee appointed to consider the whole question recommended that ten thousand ponads shanld be raised hafrære the artended scheme of bonevolence be com. menced;-- and on 7th August Grand Lodge resolved that one half of the free ingomy of Grand Lodge be awaually handed over to snah extended sobome. There is, the circle goes on to say, at the credit of the existing Lenovolout fund u suza of about 20.400, but the revenue from this amount of capital is insuffi- creat to mest svou ordinary cases of argent temporary distress; and no surplus is available whereby sunnities to infirm or aged brethrey or thoir widowa, or for the education or maluten- ance of their orphan children, osu Le provided.
