The history of ueriaaltare dates from the earliest periods of the East India Company, and the records of 1817 to 1621 term with extracts on the subject. Since that year the industry! has declined with astonishing rapidity, until in 1881-32 it was only 840,750 lbs., valued at Re. 30,17,275,Nearly the whole of this silk is pro- dused in Bengal, and therstore, in koking into the rates of the decline is the trade, it will be no- necesary to go outside of the Presidency. Mr. Liotard writes that, for the past twelve years, the silk industry has had a contians! struggle to presarte its life principle:" and the European Bostion of industry has suffered more seriously than the native.
