TTONGKONG will begin new chapter in broadcasting at 7 p.m. to- day when Mr Claude Bur- on Radio gess switches Hongkong's VHF/FM station on Mount Gough.
VHF/FM means Very High Modula- Frequency/Frequency
tion.
The new transmissions can be heard on 91 me/s. for English programmes and 94 me/s for Chinese programım.es.
What is FM?
A quick way of getting at it is a comparison between FM and the ordinary AM (Amplitude Modulation) transmissions.
Different
Radio Hongkong's new FM
station starts this evening
in 1958 from
several
different sites in the Colony.
There are, nevertheless, cer- FM lain disadvantages of FM in comparison with AM medium wave broadcasts:

May meet
If two FM stations are opera!- ing on the same frequency, their waves may meet and cross cach other's path. But they will do so well above the earth's surface. You will not hear them on the ground.
Another characteristic of the FM wave is that even if two FM stations are near each other and their wayes meet and overlay, the stronger signal of the two has a "locking effect" and "cver- rides" the weaker signal.
Thus the weaker wave cannet interfere with the stronger wave.
This is what the technicians call the "capture" or "channel grabbing" effect. It adds to the clarity of FM reception,

DRESSMAKING-CUTTING:
This produces distortion in the FM receiver but Mr Brooks wanted Hongkong listeners to note that suitable receiver overcome aerials can usually this distortion.
On Mount Gough, the station has been designed for unotiend- ed operation.
Parallel
Two transmitters in a parallel position are used on each pro- gramme instead of a maini and a trans- lower power stand-by mitter, which is more usual.
Should one transmitter fall, continues to then the other
radiate the programme at quar- ter power without the break which occurs while the stand-by transmitter is switched on.
This also obviates the need for equipment to change over 10 the stand-by transmitter.

Major E. H. Armstrong of U.S.A., inventor of FM, described experiments with this new form of broadcasting in 1935.
But FM attracted no com- mercial interest for 15 years'
after that.
After the war, an interna- tional conference was held in allocating fre- Copenhagen, quencies in Europe.
Germany did not get enough frequencies. They resorted to VHF/FM and set up their first FM transmission in 1948..
European Since then most stations have followed the Ger- man lead.
The BBC began experimenting on FM transmission in 1950 and set up the frs: FM transmission in 1955. By 1956 most of the United Kingdom was served by FM transmissions.
Three countries
Only three other countries besides Hongkong enjoy FM broadcasting in the Far East. They are Japan, Burma and South Korea.
