Britain's state-run coal industry lost £24 million last year its biggest

loss since the industry was nationalised 14 years ago.

Peter Burgoyne in his Bri- tish Newsletter in your issue of yesterday, May 31 mentioned the bewilder- ment of Britons at the U.S. criticism of Mac- millan over the failure of the Summit Conference: Knowing the U.S. as we do, one is hardly astonished with the mercurial tem- perament of her govern- ment and her people, re- membering that she is not a nation of one people but # conglomeration of an assortment .of.. many different nationalities, an Irish stew of a nation, with leftovers 23 in- gredients, not of the best possible materiais. The U.S. has always been mighty jealous of Britain and seems intent on re- moving the 'Great' from Great Britain, and whilst insisting on assuming the leadership in world affairs lacks the statesmanship that is so necessary for such a responsible post. Whilst our British prime ministers, the present and the past, all remained Lo the steadfastly loyal U.S. in spite of her con- and inued blunderings stupidity, such loyalty is and never has been re- ciprocated, as witnessed the. Suez Canal Incident' when the late Secretary of State Dulles made things as difficult as possible for America's first ally by openly siding with our enemy and criticising our action all because U.S. was not consulted before we took action against Nasser ́and his group of gangsters, as if Britain was the U.S. satellite.
