Markets had another sensational week like the first week in December-a sharp, heavy fall, a fall really alarming in its dimensions, followed not by a slow zigzag recovery but by a sharp, almost instantaneous recovery.

On Monday the index of industrial shares tumbled 4.1 points to 180.4 and in four trading days 6.2 points to 186.6; the whole recovery was based on one idea-inflation. The buying was by individuals and firms which are convinced that inflation has not been checked, but is still going strong and in those circumstances you can buy industrial shares almost at random and pick up a nice profit by and by.

Shares like Unilever, Vickers, Bowater Paper and Marks and
