Two good partnerships for the first and fourth wickets helped England score 214 for four on the opening day of the Second Test against South Africa here.

Peter Richardson and Trevor Bailey gave the side a fine start with an opening stand of 70 in two hours ten minutes. Two more wickets fell while 40 added but then Denis Compton and Colin Cowdrey came together in a solid fourth wicket partnership of 67.
