PRESS AND RADIO URGE TIGHTENING OF DISCIPLINE IN PORTUGUESE BULL RINGS

Says LUIS TEÏVES

Lisbon.

Tightening of discipline in Portuguese bull rings is being urged by press and radio here following a series of incidents culminating in wild demonstrations at a fight attended by the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Seymour Howard, during his visit to Lisbon in September.

In Portugal, unlike Spain, the bulls are never killed in the ring. The trouble arises over the finale, known as the "pega" (grasp), in which the "Mocos de Forcado" fighters grasp the bull by the neck to signify their victory over it.

The "pega", performed either by facing the bull and springing to its neck or by running along- side it and seizing its neck from the side, is supposed to be per- formed only when the bull has been well weakened by the otrows truck into his neck by fighters on horseback and on

The Mocos de Forcado not only disobeyed the order cesse their attempts to grasp it, but tried to prevent the porters from opening the gates to allow the cows to pass into the ring-- the usual method of withdraw-

Even so, it is a highly dạn- gerous operation and is forbid- don unless the home of the bull are padded to prevent goring.

The signal for the "pega" is given by the director of the fight when the fighters on foot end on hornoback have done their job.

Then the Mocos de Forcadu, in a team of about eight, enter the ring and while one springs at the head of the bull to grasp It by the neck. the others rush round the bull to help vanquish it.
