There was a sharp downturn in prices on the Hongkong Stock Exchange this week on the news that the three British banks in the Colony would increase interest rates on advances. The news and the effect it had on the market plunged Ice House Street into gloom.

Losses of up to five per cent were recorded on Wednesday-a half- day for the Stock Exchange-following the brief announcement in the

morning papers.
