OR RAINY DAYS
Rio de Janeiro, July 14. Practically every taxi driver in Rio seems to be a fugitive from would-be passengers.
There is no shortage of taxis in the Brazilian capital, the streets are filled with them racing at high speed to some secret and urgent destination. But they practically never have a passenger aboard.
One can dimly make out the figure of the driver, crouched over the wheel,
eyes averted. Try to signal to him and he starts as if you were a police with

un
On those rare occasions when one actually succeeds in getting into a taxi (the best tactics are to surprise an exhausted driver catching a catnap at the wheel). the Impression of a criminal on the run is heightened.
