EMPIRE ATHLETICS IN 1954
"THE CHINA MAIL, THURSDAY, APRIL - 21, 1955,
DISTANCE RUNNERS AND THROWERS PLACED ENGLAND WELL AHEAD
By "RECORDER”
England's distance runners in 1954 outclassed those of the rest of the British Commonwealth and Empire quantitatively and England's throwers of class were also numerically stronger. If not for these two factors, South African and Australian athletes were on a par in quantity and quality of good performers with those of the home country.
Australian superiority was in evidence only in the 100 Yards Dash and the Hop, Step and Jump. The South Africans led the Commonwealth in all three Hurdles races and in the Long Jump.

Potty is just big. So was his grandfather who stood 6ft 4ins and weighed 350 lbs. This old Boer was said to be so chest that
after 20 paces he had to sink down into a small chair which an African child carried behind him for that very purpose.
He was finally floored for good by a bolt of lightning
Patty's brother is as tall as his grandfather, his two sistera top 72 inches and his mother reaches 5ft 10in.
It is an elevated pedigree, but it does not make bim the tallest fighter to climb into a ring. Jim Cully, the Irish Mammoth, who fought only once in America, toppet him by two inches al- though weighing 51 pounds less.
However, he has the edge on Primo Camera at his boxing best by 81⁄2 inches and 41 pounds.
