Plans by the British Government to spend £50,000,000 sterling on improving what critics call the country's "17th Century" roads have caused a bigger storm of protest than 14 years of standstill in the building of new highways.

Critics representing all classes of road users have attacked the plan, each on their own grounds. The basis of the attack however is that taxes on vehicles and fuel yield roughly £1,000,000 a day, and that successive Governments have for years been "stealing" most of this money for other purposes.
