Proposal To Drop Team Games From Future Olympiads Not Likely To Succeed

It is said that the International Olympic Committee may consider seriously whether to eliminate all team games from future Olympiads. “As this would mean the dropping of soccer football, as well as hockey and basket ball, I take leave to doubt whether such a proposal will suc- ceed.
Soccer may not be a money-spinning sport in Australia-where the 1956 Games are to take place-but in Europe it brings so much grist to the mill that most countries would shy at staging an Olympiad without it.
At the same time there can be no doubt that Olympic programmes have grown top-heavy. Far too many sports have crept in, with the result that 6,294 men and 573 women competed at Helsinki, compared with 200 male competitors and officials at Athens, where the Modern Games were first held 56 years ago.

The Olympic Committee are no doubt desirous of curbing the nationalistic tendencies, aroused by the quadrennial festival as much as possible and they would be quite right in restoring it to its original basis of a contest between individuals and not countries.
