Nine months ago, the table tennis world was stunned. At the Bom- bay Championships Japan, who had not shown their colours for 16 years, walked off with the majority of the trophies.

And more startling than the fact of their success was the manner in which they gained it. For their players all used the 'pen-holder' grip, which had not been seen in the top grade game for 20 years.

Their success caused much riselussion For table tennis is probably the most universal of all gumes. There is hardly a country where it is not played. with the exception of Japan all the other countries had followed the lead of Europe and adopted the Western grip,
