BILKING THE TAXPAYERS

Washington, Aug. 22.

The United States Government today brought suit against four big American oil companies and six of their subsidiaries, accusing them of bilking the American taxpayers of $67 million through overcharges on oil shipments.

Three civil suits, seeking to recover the $67 million, were filed in the Federal District Court at New York City this afternoon.

An assistant to the Attorney General, Mr James McGranery, flew to New York to bring the action just 24 hours afte. the Senate Small Business Subcommittee on Monopoly made public a statement by the Mutual Security Agency (MSA), charging that it had to pay exorbitant

prices for Middle East oil shipped to Europe under the Marshall Plan.

Mr McGranery said in a statement that the American companies "violated the law" by using their subsidiaries to maintain a two-price system.
