DOLLAR SURPLUS OF 45 MILLIONS

Feature Of Annual Report

London, May 30,

Economic trends in the Colonies hold chief place in the annual re- port on Colonial territories for 1951-52 issued yesterday by the Colonial Office. It shows that these territories achieved, a dollar surplus of $155 millions last year, an increase of $45 million over the preceding year.

More than two-thirds of that surplus was accumulated during the first half of the year. The position during the second half is described as less satisfactory.

Most of last year's dollar surplus accrued during the January-June period, partly because shipments of cocoa to North America are marked- ly seasonal, and because rubber prices declined from their peak early in the year. In addition, no tin was exported to the U.S. in the second six

Hals A notable feature of Colonial trade in 1051 was an increased flow of imports from non-Sterling sources, including countries in the European Payments Union and Japan. Sterling imports, on the other hand, increased by n much smaller proportion in most territories. Increasing non- Sterling imports, combined with the effect of some lower export prices In the second half of the year, greatly reduced the large non-Sterling surplus which the Colonial territories, apart from Hongkong, had earned in the first half of the year and in 1950.

This is only the sixth time in 51 years that a deficit has been recorded, and it is nearly one and a half millions greater than any previously recorded.

The high import figure is attributed in sume part to the rising cost of goods and to the reopening of certain overseas Sources of supply, such as Belgium and Japan, but account also be taken of the general overstocking of piece

and the necessity for the Colony to import greater quantities of food to feed Als rapidly increasing population.

BOME CONCERN Nearly half of the adverse balance is accounted for by large stocks of sugar awaiting the your, but it is also recorded that the total quantities of the Colony's sugar, gold and canned pineapples produced for export fell considerably.
