Keeping Up UK's Earnings Of Dollars
British Interest In The
Development Problem
(FROM OUR OWN 'CORRESPONDENT) -
London, June 1.
A report just published in London by the Colonial Office indicates the. great and increasing part played by Colonial exports in keeping up carn- ings of dollars and other hard currencies.
It has long been a complaint in the Colonies that they have little idea "what they are worth," and they suspect that they are earning more than the credit they receivť.
The figures speak for themselves. Total dollar exports of the Colonies rose from a 1950 figure of $506 million to a 1051 figure of 8000 million.
The Colonial Office adds two cautious notes to this ngure
First, it states that the Hong- kong lures are not complete (and an analysis of Hongkong trade shows that. It is a dollar spender when Invisible caruings are left out) und,
Steend, it states that most of the dollar surplus developed in the first half of the year and, that the fall it rubber pelics and the drop in tin purchases Have heavily reduced the Colonies'
dollar earning power
