GIANTS BEAT DODGERS 5-4 TO WIN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE PENNANT

New York, Oct. 3,

Bobby Thomson's home run with two men on base in the ninth inning gave New York Giants' a 5-4 victory over Brooklyn Dodgers today in the final game of their playoff and the Giants won the National League perinant for the first time since 1937.

The victory climaxed the greatest comeback in baseball history, for the Glants were 13 games behind the Dodgers as late as August 11.

But the Giants then started a drive which gave them a number of victories and they ended the regular 161-game season in a tie with the Dodgers. The Giants won the first playoff game; the Dodgers won the second. So everything" rode on the third game,

ENGLAND AND FRANCE DRAW 2-2 AT ARSENAL STADIUM Poor Exhibition Of Football

By VERNON MORGAN

London, Oct. 3..

England and France drew 2-2 in their international soccer en counter at the Arsenal Stadium, Londen, today after a somewhat, poor exhibition of football.

All the scoring was done in the first half,

England preserved her record of being unbeaten on her own soit by a con. tinental side, but only just. With seconds to go, the French centre-forward, Jean Grumellon, brought in at the last minute, got right away and should have scored a winning goal.

He hesitated and his weak shot was blocked by the advancing English goal- keeper. Thus was lost a golden opportunity.
