Good Response To Schoolboys' Events In Hardcourt Tourney
There has been a very good response to the School- boys' events in the Colony Open Hardcourt Tennis Cham- pionships sponsored by the Chinese Recreation Club, due to begin on September 10.
The greatest number of 29 entries since the introduc- tion of the event in 1949 has been received for the School- boys' Singles.

Hastings, Sept. 1. An England XI scored 171 for three wickets on the first day of the three-day festival match against the South Afeicans here today.
Denis Compton, the England batsman, showed his best form for 70 and was undefeated scored in 70 minutes when rain ended play for the day, half an hour before the tea interval.
Play was resumed after lunch in a steady drizzle but this did not affect Compton, who was in his best form. He danced round the wicket and punished all the bowlers. He was particularly severe on Tayfield, who be hit for 18 in one over.
