Free Enterprise Abandoned In West Germany

Frankfurt, July 9.

The United States has abandoned "free enterprise" as a solution to West. Germany's economic trouble in favour of strong pressure for controls and planning.

The United States' position was made public here during the past week as a result of the bitter controversy: stirred up in German Government and business circles and in the Press by Jean Cattier's statement before his resignation on July 1 as Mar- shall Plan chief for Germany.

Sources close to the Conserva- tive Government of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer attempted to spread the impression that Mr Cattier's slashing attack on high profts, low wages and the en- tire basis of German

Oil Dispute

Washington, July 9.

President Truman offered today to send his Foreign Affairs ad-* viser, Mr W. Averell Harriman, to Persia to help in a settlement of the Persian oil dispute.

Mr Truman made his offer in a message to the Persian Prime Minister, Dr Mohammed Mossadeq. Mr Truman said in his letter that the oil dispute threatened a collapse of oil operations which would be a (lisaster.

Mr Truman said that the time available for settling the dispute was running out.

He declared, "You know of our sympathetic interest in this country in Iran's desire to control its natural resources, From this point of view we were happy to see that the British Government has on its part accepted the principle of nationalisation."
