The mammoth Festival of Britain boxing night at the White City showed boxing fans at least three things.
First, that Jack Gardner, the British, Empire and European Heavyweight Champion, is not the boxer, yet, that his admirers thought he was.
Second, that in Johnny Williams Britain has a tip-top No. 2 heavyweight. Third, that if a new world title is going to come to Britain. Don Cockell, the cruiserweight, is the man most likely to get it.
Even if one allows for the fact that Gardner had, firstly, a sprained left hand before he entered the ring and a badly gashed right eye after the third round as the esult of a clash of heads, his performance against the Argentine Champion, Cesar Brion, was far from impressive.

A fine century by Reg Simpson enabled England to score 251 runs for three here in reply to wickets by the close of play on the third day of the Test match South Africa's first innings total of 483 for nine wickets declared.
Simpson provided the crowd of 30,000 with one of the most dazzling displays of stroke play seen in postwar Test cricket. He made 137 out of 230 in four and a half hours and hit 21 fours.
