Stalemate Likely Senate Again

In

Melbourne, Apr. 27.

Electoral experts here believe that the voting in the General Election being held throughout Australia tomorrow may well result in a stalemate in the Senate.

In that case, the only solution would appear to be a referendum in which the country would be asked to sanction a change in the Constitution to allow an alteration in the method of voting for the Senate.

At present the Senate is elected by a system of pro- portional representation. At the Inst elections, in 1949, this resulted in a Labour majority of 18 in the Senate although a sharp swing away from Labour gave the pre- sent Government a majority of 27 in an enlarged House of Representatives of 121,

It was this Labour majority al preparedness for in the Sonate which led the chief élection issues. Prime Minister, Mr Robert G. Menzies, to appeal to the coun- try after only 16 months office.
