Radio Listening

For Next Week In Detail-A "China

Mail" Feature

Chekhov's Best: "The Cherry Orchard"

Fay Compton Heads BBC Production

"The Cherry Orchard", to be broadcast over Radio Hongkong on Monday at 10 p.m., was Chekhov's last play, and it is considered by many to be his finest. In this BBC production, translated and adapted for radio by Harold Bowen, a strong cast is headed by Fay Compton as Madame Ranevskaya, owner of the Cherry Orchard, and Edward Chapman as Lopahin, the rich, vulgar merchant who buys it and cuts it down.

Every now and then that witty pair, Stephen Potter and Joyce Grenfell, collaborate to turn in to the BBC 11 programme in the 'How' series, which in the past has included 'How to give a Party', 'How to Blow Your Own Trumpet', or 'How to Talk to Children'-and wise radio listeners have immediately made a note of the date and time of the broadcast. This time it is in the turn of 'How to Listen', a title which includes How Not To, How You Ought To, and How You Won't.' Friday at 10.30 p.m.

In Pleasure from Books" this week Major Hastingstaly (Mercer)--Ralph is the speaker, and he deals with the subject of reading books on travel. To his mind, non-fiction at its best is found in books by travellers about their journeyings, Orch: Green Bolphin whether they take place in a suburb of London or from Kashgar, across the Hwangho to the Karakoram Range; and a travel book, he says, should be a vivid personal experience not a dull, factual guide-book, but as Kinglake (one of the three authors discussed by Hastings) claims of his book 'Eothen" thoroughly free of all details of discovery and research and statistics and politics and moral reflection".

In our Forces' programme today at 4 p.m. listeners will be able to hear the well-known Canadian actor Robert Beatty as Philip Odell in the first episode of a new mystery serial called 'Spot the Lady",

(Broadcasting on a frequency of 845 kilocycles per second and on 9.52 megocycles per second in the 31 metre band).
