Mexico and low-priced
motor cars
With British and other Euro- pean cars entering the Mexican market, it is believed unlikely that the Mexican Government will increase its quata for U.S. car imports this year.
The reason is that the Govern- ment la anxious to stimulate the Dssembly of lower-priced cars, particularly those that sell well below £750, in existing Mexican assembly works.
The least expensive US. cars assembled in Mexico sell at abou £625.
On the other hand, the Hillman Minx, now entering the market for the first time, is ex- pected to sell for not more than 2600. The
quota for the assembly 1040-50 Annncial year permits the assembly of 10,100 motor vehicles. Almost all this quota is taken up by U.S. compnales, which are now pressing for an increase for the 1050-51 financial year.
The 40 cars a year assembled in the Hudson works include 200 Renaults, at present the only European car selling in Mexico. Retail price lstabout £550.
General Motors is hoping to 7erich similar arrangement for the assembly of German Opels, over and above its present quota. The Packard works in Mexico is also understood to have
