DEFENCE QUESTIONS STANDARD

....

OF TRUTH IN COWIE'S EVIDENCE

ri

The standard of truth in the evidence given by William Henry Cowie, the Crown's chlof witness at the Conspiracy Trial, was questioned by the defence in the packed courtroom of the Supreme Court yoster- day. Mr. H. G. Sheldon, KC, leading counsel for Marcus A. do Silva, solicitor, in his cross-examination of Cowle recalled the action brought by him last year against the Attorney General for wrongful dismissal from the Hong Kong Police which failed.

Recalling further that the then Chlef Justice, Sir Leslie Gibson, in the course of the Judgment had pointed out that either the. Police or Cowie had committed perjury, Mr. Shel- don asked Cowle whether he was using the same standard of truth.

Cowie replied he was on oath to tell the truth.
