A popular figure in local Chinese shipping circles who has recently come into the limelight as a rosult of the United States claim for 42 mortgaged Chinese ships is Mr. Charles Kiang. Newly appointed official spokesman for China Mer- chants Steamship Navigation Company, China's largest shipping organisation which re- cently switched allegiance in favour of the Communist regime, Mr. Kiang is concurrently Director of General Affairs and Secretary to General Manager C.C. Tong, of SMSN, Hong Kong.

Mr. Kiang, who has proved himself to be a friend of the Press, owes his foundation in the shipping business partly. to' Butterfield and Swire and the Texas Company, both of which he served in China be- ginning from the early 30s.
