Japanese Price Levels Discussed

In Commons

London, November 14.

General Douglas MacArthur's authority to take de- cisions abolishing price controls on Japanese exports was questioned in the House of Com- mons today.

Labour member J. Paton asked if the British Gov- ernment were satisfied that General Mac- Arthur had the right to make such, decisions without consultation with the Far East Com- mission.

The Foreign Under-Secre tary, Christopher Mayhew, said, "I think it is, a fact that the Supreme Commander was fully within his rights

in taking these decisions

which in no way prejudice British interests."

He said General MacArthur's rights were limited by the Far Eastern Commission's directives

and that so far they had not |given him any directives on, the matter of removing price controls. He added, "Until they do so the Suprime

Commander is free to zet"

Members on both sides of the House then said they wished to record that the pre-emptory man- ner in which General MacArthur made his decisions was question:|

ble.

Labour member Harold Davies said,

"The

manner in which these decisions are taken by the Sup Teme Commander is affecting British business, and both side of the House are perturbed by. the influence

on the British |textile industry of these deci-

sions."
