The State Department today announced that the
United States had directed General MacArthur) to turn over to French Indo-China and Thai- land US$81,000,000 in Japanese gold ear- marked for those countries during the war but never delivered.
The United States' action was taken despite the the strenuous objections of a number of members of the 11-nation Far Eastern Com- mission.
The bullion included $43,700,-1 000 for Thailand, which had been earmarked for credits extended to Japan by that country from 1941 to 1945.
The remaining $37,300.000 was sarnaked by the Japanese for the French Bank of Indo-China.
Disruption of Japanese shipping to the Southern areas during the latter stages of the war prevented delivery of the gold.
