Decontrolled prices of imported wines and spirits ara expected ultimately to mean slightly. cheaper drinks for Britain, but the present high. prices have not yet fallen much.

Control of maximum retail prices and wholesale prices of all imported wines and spirits was abandoned on January 1.

expenditure governed by the Treasury, importers hope to be able to supply better products at lower prices.

Customs duties. are still high and domestic taxation almost prohibitive but experts in the trade believe that with more dis- crfbinate purchasing overseas now possible, the cost of wines and spirits in British hotels, restaur- ants and shops can be lowered.
