Release For The Move To
Treasury
Washington, May 4.
Establishment of a free market for gold was urged |
by Senator Pat McCarran, Nevada Democrat, as a brake on inflationary pressures. He has a bill to accomplish that purpose. It would, he said, aid the Treasury savings bonds in mobiilising "hot" dollars.
He pointed out that in 1937 and 1938 contracts for payment: in gold were invalidated, pos- session of gold and gold cer- 9-15/16tificates was outlawed, and the Government became the only legal purchaser of the metal.
McCarron said is estimated that gold imports in the next 12 months will be US$2,000,000,000 6-16/10 or US$3,000,000,000.
lie sau inflationary pressures resulting will-serve as basis for A six to one "expansion of bank credit and deposits.
