JAPANESE FOREIGN TRADE

SLUMP IN 1947

Tokyo, June 16. | Japanese foreign trade during the first four months of 1947 registered -4 sharp drop com- pared with the figures for last year, according to statisties released by Japan's official Trade Board.

The sudden decline in export is chiefly caused by the United States "cool" attitude toward Jap- anese raw silk. During the first fourth months of this year, Japanese exporters only managed to dispose on the American market 30 bales' of raw silk-an insignificant fraction of last vear's export of 82,000 bales to the United States, The Trade Board expected that raw silk exports to the United States would pick up in the near future, as 3,000 bales of raw silk had already left for the United States in May.
