DEADLY SHELL FUSE Discovery That "Hunts" Unseen Mark

A Marvel Of Ingenuity

London, Sept. 16.

A shell that hunts its target with invisible, pro- bing fingers of ultrashort radio waves owes its uncanny accuracy to one of the war's ma- jor inventions, the "VT" or proximity fuse.... Ranked second only to the atomic bomb among the scientific discoveries of the war, the pro- ximity fuse played a vital role in defeating the buzz-bomb menace over Britain.

The fuse operates on a total- ly new principle. Earlier types were of two kinds, the contact fuse and the time fusе,

The contact fuse had to hit the target, and the tirae fuse required calculations of distance and time of travel, introducing a wide margin of error.

(wn Calculator

The VT fuse does its own calculating. It detonates the shell automatically as soon aa it comes within Icthal distance of the target-75 to 100ft, in the case of aircraft.

It performs this uncanny feat by sending out radio waves and receiving the reflected alg- nal from the target.

Immediately the shell leaves the gun a continuous radar sig- nal comes from the antenna in the hose.

As the shell approaches the target, the signal is reflected, returning as a weaker impulse to the receiving set.

Within the critical range of the target, the signal becomes strong enough, aided by an amplifier, to operate 11 radio tube known as a "thyratron."

New Problems This Bunde an electric

rent through a detonator which sets off a booster charge to ex- plode the shell.

Thus the shell "holda its fire" until it is close enough to bring down the target.

Radio engineers faced tremen dous new problems in desigu- ing a radar set small enough to fit into the nose of a shell, yet
