MISTAKEN
On this occasion Dr. Gubbins, the notorious Flect Street quack, will deal with popular beliefs and grandmothers' Anyings handed down from generation to generation, and answer if they are false or true.
Fish is a brain food. False. Anybody who thinks he will become more intelligent if he eats more fish is such an obvious fool that no amount of would make any difference to fish, or any other kind of food,
a mind like that.
It la true that there is phos- phorus in flah and phosphorus in the brain tissue but that doesn't mean that if you swallow a pound of plafce it will go straight to your head and turn you into a genius.
If you are born a fool, you will remain' a fool, even if you swallowed a whale..
Note: Don't write in and tell me that a whale isn't a fish. Stuff a cold and starve a fever.)
Falso, To Atuff or starvo yourself at any time is either disgusting gluttony or neurotic self-pity. To dlo either when you are ill is plain nonsense. If your own inside can't tell you what you need, no doctor cannot
even a real one.
And as you can't stuff your- self at any time unless' you are in the black market and you have heen half-starved for years, I advise you to eat anything you can grab hold of.
Although the composition the new Taxation Committee has been publicly criticised, Govein- ment has ranged farther afield than is usual in its choice of mem- bers and it is, all things consider- Jed, fairly representative of the main interests involved. Only two Government officials have a seat on the eleven-man Committee, the Financial Secretary who is to act as Chairman, and Mr. W. M. Thomson, whose experience as Tel. Nos. Director of Supplies, Trade and Industry should prove of consider- able value. Nobody will pretend that the Committee has either an casy or a particularly pleasant task. The time when living costs are abnormally high, and are plac ing a severe strain upon the pri- vate budgets of seventy to eighty per cent of the community, is not one when increased taxation will he most favourably received, and if there is any significance at all in the spate of correspondence in the Press on the subject of taxation,My husband and I have had it is rolbly to be found in the little education, and have never taught ourselves anything. This somewhat natural instinct to argue in favour of placing the means that our children will not
have much intelligence. greatest weight where it will least affect the advocates of this form of taxation or that. The Commit tee's terms of reference cover the entire system of taxation, with their attention particularly direct ed towards recommending what existing taxes can be stiffened, what new sources of revenue can he immediately utilised and whe- ther Income Tax is a practical alternative to the War Revenue simplication thereof. As far as the Committee is concerned, the paramount consideration must be equitability of distribution cording to means, and the key to the correct answer lies is what scope any particular tax allows for evasion. The merits of direct taxation as against indirect taxa- tion, these days scarcely justifies argument, yet such is Hong Kong that those who ürge various methods of increasing the revenue through indirect levies are able to make out a sub-tantial case. Of course, nu programme will meet with universal approval. At best, we shall get a series of compro mises between conflicting view. points that cannot otherwise be reconciled. In such

False. Education has nothing to do with intelligence. Although it can, and does, help a clever man, it can do nothing at all for a ninny. The common belief that clever children are always- born of clever parents, and the re- verse, is also a fallacy.
The world has always been full of the ne'er-do-well nons of successful men, not always be cause the sons are stupid, but because life is made easy for them. So they don't try hard enough. Most people don't try until faced with disaster.
On the other hand, history shows that the majority of ex- ceptionally clever men have been the sons of ordinary; half-educa ted people.
But don't get excited about this. It's a million to one that your children will be fools like
you.
Carrying a weight on the head improves the carriage.
True. It is obvious that to carry a weight on the head you must keep your neck straight and your shoulders back.
But you can't walk about the streets with pots and pans on your head without causing a Bensation. And don't experiment with China ornaments. They're scarce enough as it is.
Fot men are folly. Faise. Fat men appear to be jolly, because it is expected of them. They are also trying to laugh it off. But they are really embarrassed by their big tum mics, and often cry themselves to sleep at night,
most controversial issue will be Income Tax, and since no plan that has been advanced in Hong Kong has been able to command Unofficial support, those who predict a negative answer by the Committee are not likely to prove very far wrong, The Financial
