when the hearing was resumed of the charge against Sir Delves Broughton of murdering the Earl of Erroll.
She was describing a dinner party at the Muthaiga Club at which she herself, Sir Delves and Lady Broughton and Lord Erroll were present on January 23 a few hours before Lord Erroll was found shot in a car.
During dinner, said Lady Carbery, Sir Delves, who appeared cheerful, proposed a toast to the health and happiness of Lady Broughton and Lord Erroll and their future child.

Lady Broughton came and talked to Lady Carbery for half an hour and then went to bed. It was 20 minutes later, said Lady Carbery, that she heard S.r Delves Broughton walking along the corridor. He knocked at her door and asked her how she was. She had complained earlier of being feverish. Just before that Lady Broughton's dog in her bedroom had barked furiously.
The next morning, Lady Car- bery continued, Lady Broughton came into her room and told her that Lord Erroll had been killed in a car smash. Lady Carbery lunched with Sir Delves at the Broughtons' house. Lady Brough- ton remained in her room.
Over coffee and brandy after lunch Sir Delves said how up- set he was about Lord Erroll's death for Lady Broughton's sake, and then burst into tears.
Ludy Carbery and Lady Broughton later that day went to the former's house at Nyeri.] and Lady Carbery said she wes surprised when a few days after- words Sir Delves Broughton sud- denly appeared one evening and asked her the gist of a state- ment she had made to the police. Nairobi's woman Mayor, Lady Delamere, was the next witness. She said that she was in the official procession at Lord Erroll's funeral, when Sir Delves Brough- ton, who arrived as the funeral ended, asked her what he should do with a letter his wife had en- trusted to him to place in Lord Erroll's grave.

The court was cleared in the afternoon for an unknown wit- ness, the magistrate intimating that publication of this evidence might prejudice the accused at his trial. A protest by newspaper representatives was overruled.
