Moving On With Unbroken Momentum

(By Reuter's Correspondent At Tobruk)

IN THE LIGHT OF THE SETTING SUN, I CAN HEAR THE DISTANT RUMBLE OF GUNS FAINTLY OVER THE DESERT. EARLIER YES- TERDAY IT WAS A LITTLE LOUDER AND A LITTLE NEARER.

The battle moves on with unbroken re- gularity. While British planes continue con- stant patrols over enemy territory the Italian air force, which has been almost completely absent since the fall of Bardia, remains on the ground.

A captured Italian pilot told me to-day that long rows of ina chines on aerodromes to the rear had been put out of

action by British bombers.

Tobruk itself suffered severe.

The Liberal "News Chronicle" points out that the German incursion into the Mediter- ranean is more than a sideshow.

To avoid losing the war Hitler resistance must "beat down the of this country across the Chan- nel and do it soun."

The Labour "Daily Herald" codifies the factors inspiring con. fidence in Britain's ability to meet "the greatest test which civi- lised humanity has ever suffered."

"The Times," observing that #peculation on the nature of a possible assault is unprofitable, states: "The coolest and most sober estimate of the enemy's chances points to the odds be- ing against him."

The paper concludes: "The evil to which we are opposed is po- werful and may contain potentia- lities for violence hitherto un- revealed but it can be faced and beaten and it will be,"

Shortening War

Under the title "Shortening the War" the "Daily Telegraph" pub- lishes a long leader emphasising the desirability of speeding up American aid to Britain and say- ing:

"The American people have it in their power to shorten the war and there is no doubt of- the course they will take." The "Daily Mail" concentrates attention on plans for increasing output of British, factories, saying "Speed up the expansion of in- dustry this year."-Reuter.
