I SUPPOSE THE HEAVY RAINS THAT FELL UPSETS

DURING JULY AND AUGUST HAD AN INDIRECT

EFFECT ON THE GLUT OF HEAVY SCORING

THAT HAS MÅRKED THE OPENING OF THE CUR- RENT CRICKET SEASON,

As a general rule a complete season rarely brings more than half a dozen centuries all told and here we are now, with only two fairly complete blocks of matches played, well on to that number already.

To my mind, there is little doubt that the prolonged rest that most of the grounds had, because of the Summer rainfall, is the cause. Wickets are very nice and grassy and true although a trifle on the slow side. Until we have usual prolonged Winter drought period I think we shall continue to have high scoring,

A most remarkable match on Saturday was that between Civil Service and Recreio or should I say the Gosanos! Members of the latter family were very much in the picture, L. G. taking 7 for 8 and G. N.. making 101 not out. Apart from these two, perform- ances there is httle that calls for comment unless it be Fortescue's great effort to stop the Civil Ser vice rot, and Baker's fine spell of bowling for Civil Service in his first match for some time.

served. Souza did not wish to start off too violently and so did not open and A. H. Esmail and A. | K Ismail went on first. Both were left-handers rather unusual two| left-handers opening the bowling. Esmail bowled some useful stuff and will probably be given further opportunities of proving himself but Ismail developed a strain in his side after bowling three overs and that finished him for the afternoon.
