Keep A Firm Grip

By BEST BALL

The average golfer cannot afford to loosen his grip dur- ing the stroke. For that mat- ter neither can. the expert player. Bobby Jones used to relax the last two fingers of his left hand a trifle at the top of the stroke, to absorb the shock of the change in direction downward but the grip was so firm in the rest of the fingers and right hand that nó trouble resulted.

When the run-of-the-mine player loosens his grip how- ever, his hands are quite like- ly to resume their hold on the shaft in just a bit different fashion than they did at ad- dress. They may, for instance, separate an inch or so in their grasp. This in turn changes" their position in respect to the élubhead alignment, which at address was at right angles to the ball. At impact however, due to the altered grip, the clubface is very likely to be at a considerably différent angle.
