PEARL DIVER PILOT IN

R.A.F.

Tahitian Shakes Hands

With King

A pearl diver from the tiny South Sea island of Tahiti, who has joined the R.A.F., recently met the King.

Aircraftman Anthony Eugene Cam- miade, the only Tahitian in H.M. Forces, was told by the King at Buckingham Palace: "I am proud to have such a man in the British forces."

"Only a few words and a hand shake," Cammiade said, but they made him the proudest and most nervous man in the world.. Nervous?

This from a man who for the last 10 years has been seeking adventure in every corner of the globe.

While at his training quarters "somewhere in England," Cammiade received a letter of

congratulation

from the King and a request that he should visit the Palace.

"Although the King was so charm- ing, I was overcome and could hardly speak," he said. "Many times before I had seen his picture and thought that one day I might see him go by in a procession, but never did I think that I should shake hands with him."

Cammiade was a pilot in the Sino- Japanese war. "But fighting in that war was mere child's play compared with the experience of meeting the

King."

For

years he had been a pearl diver, but left Tahiti because he wanted a change-and new thrills.

GERMANS TO OPPOSE FAR EAST CHANGES

Germany maintains strict neutrality in the Far East and has no ambitions in Shanghai. If any country tries to change the status of the foreign settlements in Shanghai by making use of the German victory in France or by making use of German residents here the German

government will strongly protest,

The first raid was made on a Fas- cist meeting held in Pretoria-avenue, Walthamstow.

The speaker was arrested, taken to the local police station, and charged under the Public Order Act.
