Fly In The Ointment (SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL") 7 London, To-day. Well-informed circles state the mission of Sir Wilfred Greene to Rome,
When the Belgian troops entered the battlefield they comprised 18 divisions and part of the permanent garrisons of Liege and Namur.
During 18 days of extremely hard fighting the Belgian troops suffered very heavy losses, especially when the Albert Canal Was broken through.
The number of Belgian effectives which have surrendered to the Ger- mans as result of Leopold's decision is estimated at 300,000.
Somme Fighting
The increased burden on the Allied troops in the north is, however, eased. somewhat by the massive intervention of their air forces endeavouring to counter-act German action by bomb- ing and destruction..
In other battle zones the operations are proceeding favourably, notably in the Somme area, where an important move is now proceeding details of which will probably be available to- day.--Havas.

Falling Back On Calais -
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL”V While no reliable information is Belgians| available regarding the present posi- tion of the Allied, armies in North- East France, the statement in the om- cial communique that new disposi tions are being taken up is taken in well-informed quarters to indicate that the B:21. and French divisions
are falling back upon Calais and Dunkirk, on the coast.
Whether the manoeuvre can be -accomplished, no-one is-prepared to predict as the Germans are rushing for Dunkirk along the Belgian coast, While the German High Command claims that driving through the collapsed Belgian positions along the Lys, their advanced units have already reached Hazebrouck.
