SHEEP DOGS HONG KONG QUEEN'S & ALHAMBRA
The motor cycle has become a de- finitely important item in Britain's war economy, not only on active ser- vice and on the home front, but in exports to help the country's foreign exchange.
In the absence of sanatoria, all Hong Kong hospitals have to take their share of work in the fight against tuberculosis, and typical of the work is that of the Queen Mary Hospital, As the position in regard to mater with its male and female wards of 20 ials is clarified, markets like South beds each, which are always full to America, India and South Africa, into capacity, the Hong Kong Anti-Tuber- which Germany had recently sub-culosis Association informs the 'China sidised her way, are being tackled by the British industry.
Already one concern is sending machines overseas for police and mes- senger work, patrol duties on pipe lines, and a variety of municipal and military activities. In the British Isles thirty police constabularies now use motor cycles.
On the "home front" of the war there is a very wide range of types running on A.R.P. work, and for wo- men's services, naval depots and air defence.
On active service the motor cycle is being more extensively used than ever before, not only by despatch carriers and military police but to pilot lorry drivers from their ammuni- tion posts forward to the points where ammunition is required. Drivers find that they can easily follow a motor cyclist, who is to them a kind of mechanical sheep dog showing his flock the way it should go.
MENU OF 154 DISHES WAS REPLY TO "SHORTAGE"
Colonel H.W. Burton, M. P., is one of the latest people in this country to receive from the United States an of- fer to be supplied with foodstuffs be- national foud cause of the reputed shortage in Britain.
a
To counter this result of German propaganda, Colonel Burton sent reassuring reply, together with a cur- rent menu, showing 154 dishes, of the London hotel of which he is a director.

Discrimination has to be used, as it is not possible to admit all cases re- quiring treatment. At the same time, while cases are selected where there is a reasonable chance of recuperation, all too often patients have to be ad- tnitted who are beyond all hope of re-
covery.
Tuberculosis of the lungs "con- sumption" accounted for over 75 per cent of Hospital's 10,649 cases in 1939, the case mortality rate being 200 për 1,000. An interesting comment is made by the Anti-T.B. Association in this connection:-
"A remarkable feature in the his- tories of patients is the relatively short period during which they have com- symptoms plained of any untoward As many as 50 per cent of the cases date the onset of the disease to within two months and 80 per cent to within one year. In many cases this informia- tion is not compatible with the advanc- ed state of the disease as revealed on examination.
"One can only attribute this dis- parity to the stoical nature of the Chinese, who have accustomed them- selves to endure discomfort and minor symptoms of ill-health with indiffer- ence.".
Tuberculosis is essentially a desease which manifests itself in early life, and, indeed, at the Queen Mary Hos-. pital 58 per cent of the cases were under 30 years of age.
No special significance is attached to the fact that two-thirds of the patients were men, because "females are less inclined to seek hospital treat- On the other hand, the men ment.' do not stay in hospital so long, so that the turn-over of cases admitted is greater.
GOLD COIN IN GRANITE
A half-sovereign, probably dropped by a passer-by more than seventy years ago, has been found by Mr. P. G. Barrett, of Drayton-gardens, West Drayton, Middlesex, while remodel- ling a block of granite from the old Waterloo Bridge.
The coin is dated 1863. It was lodged in the mortar. The bridge was opened in 1817, so the coin could not be one of those placed in the founda- tions.
