THE WRONG LEAD
to get in with the club Ace and three heart tricks could then be run. East would then naturally shift to a spade. If he led a low one, the con- tract would be set two; but if he bold- ly laid down the 'Queen, the defence could run off four spade tricks. Thus, the difference between the right and wrong lead on this hand is actually four tricks.
In choosing the opening lead against | Queen of hearts, with the spade suit a notrump contract it is well to note held in reserve. East would be bound the vast difference between a four- card and a five-card suit. It usually pays to lead from a five-card suit headed by some tenace such as Ace- Queen or King-Jack, for you have a slight chance of running off five tricks immediately and a very good chance | of eventually capturing four tricks in the suit. Thus, even though your open- ing lead costs a trick, you will often defeat a three-notrump contract pro- vided your partner can win an early round trick.
*
When holding only a four-card suit, You were Oswald Jacoby's partner the proposition is entirely yesterday. Neither side was vulner- changed, for if
lose able and you held: you trick,
the remaining that you will win is not sufficient com- pensation. Here is a typical example:

ANSWER: Your correct bid is to pass. You have re-opened the bidding, and if your partner held a really tre- mendous hand, he could have jump- ed to three notrump: directly.
Score 100% for pass, 60% for three diamonds (you have only a five-card suit), 30% for three notrump (a. bad gamble).
