LABOUR THINKS PAYMENTS ARE TOO HIGH
London, To-day.
THE HOUSE OF COMMONS on Thursday night dis- cussed the Government's scheme for preventing a rise in food prices by subsidies of £1,000,000 a week.
Mr. A. V. Alexander (Labour) said that the tax- payer was already providing £40,000,000 a year through the extra duties on sugar and tea and was now asked to find £50,000,000 more for food subsidies.
YUGOSLAVIA MAKES
NEW MOVE
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")
Belgrade, To-day. All Yugoslavian purchases of tin abroad will from now on be effected by the Cerels Export Company, it is offi- cially announced.
The decision was taken in order to protect Yugoslav interests against Ger- man trusts whose branches in Bel- grade took Yugoslavia's whole tin im- port quota "and attempted to re-ship the metal to Germany."
On the other hand, the decision apparently reflects the urgent feel- ing clearly apparent throughout Europe for the concentration and control of key industries, Authorised circles assert that the export company will eventually be- come the sole purchaser of metals from abroad for Yugoslavia.--Havas.

Some Members asked why the Government had not bought com. modities more fully.
Mr. W. S. Morrison, Minister of Food, replied that this would have played into the hands of speculators in certain foreign countries.

The Premier, M. Edouard Daladier, stated yesterday that among innumerable documents seized recently during police searches were a number of questionnaires to which Gestapo agents in [France were required to an-

"It is for Parliament to reply to these questionnaires,” declared M. Daladier.
"Those on the other side of the Maginot Line must be told that their efforts to destroy the morale of this country, because they have been unable to destroy the hu- man French wall, are in vlan. "Gestapo agents in France Rre numerous because espionage had been encouraged by:

FAR-SIGHTED SCHEME
The "Daily Telegraph" says that the Government's scheme is a far- sighted one. No doubt payments to farmers are on the high side, but we want to encourage home production
of food.
the
The paper is satisfied that payments are justly allotted.
"The Times" admits that scheme will be a considerable burden, but without it the total cost to the nation would be very much greater.
Further rises in food prices would have produced a feeling of instability and a rise in wages and costs would have been a heavy handicap to the export trade of the country,
