SOVIET THREAT TO INDIA
NOT FEARED
London, To-day. IN REGARD TO REPORTS which have appeared from time to time of alleged Soviet threats to British India, Reuter's diplomatic correspondent is able to state on high authority that at present there are no Indications whatever of any threatening concentrations of Soviet troops in the neighbour- hood of Afghanistan.
The correspondent adds that any threat to India from the north would almost inevitably have to be directed through Afghanistan.
Competent military quarters point out that in any event an invasion of Afghanistan or Iran from the north as the first step against British interests in Asia would to-day present even greater difficulties than in the historic past.
A modern mechanised army would find almost insuperable obstacles in Iran or Afghanistan, particularly in the latter country, where the absence

CARDINAL
DENOUNCES THE NAZIS
Cardinal Hinsley, Roman Catholic of railways, the poor roads, high Archbishop of Westminster, in a the flerce Afghan broadcast on "The Sword of the guerilla fighters (fanatically deter-Spirit," declared that it was by the
defend the Moslem faith spirit that Britain would conquer. against what they regard as the "materialism" of the West) would combine to ensure that any invader from the north would face an ex- tremely difficult and probably lengthy campaign. Reuter,

"Britain will shenthe the sword," he said, "the moment that her op- ponents yield to the force of right and to the claims of freedom."
He was convinced that Britain had engaged in this war in the main for the defence of the things of the spirit. She had taken up arms in the cause of justice and freedom.
"Even if our critics, here and in other countries, allege that our mo- tives for entering the war were mixed and tainted with self-interest in some shape or other, what I have just said and shall say makes it quite possible to fight this war without any thought of self-interest at all.

SMILES ARE BROADER
As there has been a tendency to- wards the less sophisticated type of programme since the outbreak of war, the B.B.C. are finding it necessary to keep a closer watch than hitherto on "indelicacy."
The subject also figures promin- ently in the inquiries which are al- ways held regularly on the program-
mes.

DUTY TO PROTEST
can
"We English are noted for our readi- ness to compromise. But there be no compromise on the first princi-| ples of right and wrong, no compro- mise between Christianity and the rival brands of anti-Christian tyranny.
"I consider it my
duty to protest aloud against any prosecution of the Christians of Poland, any persecution of Catholics and Orthodox, as I have. protested in the past publicly and vigorously against the persecution of Jows and others in Nazi Germany.
Cardinal Hinsley suggested that there was a biblical parallel to the position to-day when Herod - "that fox" as Christ styled him-and Pon- thus Pilate made friends the day they
of His followers carried the Gospel of the spirit to the ends of the earth.
The war-time programmes, it is generally admitted, have contained | crucified Christ.' Yet the faithful band more of the broad variety of jokes than did their immediate peace-time prede- cessors, but there has not been an in- crease in the number of listeners' let ters complaining. .
